'MAGIC' Coaching for Young People
So what exactly is the MAGIC programme and what benefits can it provide?
The MAGIC programme has been designed and developed specifically to provide coaching for 'young' people, aged 10 to 20.
Participants in the programme can expect to see improved motivation, self awareness, assertiveness, confident communication and listening skills.
Although the programme is primarily for groups of from 4 to 12 students, it can be presented on a one-to-one basis if required.
MAGIC can assist young people from all backgrounds and academic abilities by enhancing their attitude towards educational skills and employment prospects.
When presented to groups, the programme will normally be spread over 6 - 8 weeks, with a two hour session per week. When presented on a one-to-one basis,
a one hour session would be anticipated.
During the first MAGIC session, participants will be introduced to the concept of personal coaching. They will be informed that the programme is for their benefit
and no one else's. Ground rules will be set - with common agreement.
Participants will be assured that anything discussed within the session, will be confidential and will not be reported back to members of school staff.
The only exception to this rule is where a legal duty of care requires that a nominated member of staff is informed.
The following five weeks will each be devoted to a core topic of the MAGIC programme:
M - Motivation
A - Assertiveness
G - Goal Achievement
I - Initiative
C - Confident Communications
The remaining one or two weeks of the programme can be devoted to one-to-one coaching of participants if required.
The MAGIC programme will be presented in an informal and fun way - various games will be played as appropriate to the module in progress.
Personal involvement by each of the participants is very much part of the programme.
Coaching is entirely non-judgmental and non-directive.
PowerPoint presentations, white board and flip charts will be used. Each participant will receive their own ring binder for course notes and hand-outs.
What the 'National College for School Leadership' says:
"Coaching is an approach whose time has arrived. Policy makers and national bodies (Department for Education and Skills (DfeS), National College for School Leadership (NCSL), Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), General Teaching Council for England (GTC) and the Primary and Secondary National Strategies) are seeking ways of maximising the impact of coaching on the lives of both learners and teachers".
Coaching is available for both learners and teachers - who can be taught to act as the schools own coaching staff.
